The Kalimotxo Cocktail comes together simply enough, just combine red table wine + cane sugar cola + a squeeze of lime juice for a refreshing, super easy cocktail.
I was flipping through a couple of cookbooks earlier this month and came across this recipe again. It's the Kalimotxo cocktail. The Internet tells me that the Kalimotxo is popular in the Basque region of Spain. So, there you go. There's that.
AND! A Kalimotxo is composed of... wait for it... red wine and soda! I know that this combination may sound strange, but trust me!

🌟 Why You'll Love This Recipe
It only uses three ingredients. We love a drink that only needs a few ingredients.
It's like sangria, but for lazy people. Hear me out: sangria, but faster.
It couldn't be easier to make. If you can pour liquid into a glass, you can make this drink.
💭 What is a Kalimotxo?
A Kalimotxo is a cocktail that's popular in the Basque region of Spain that's made with Spanish red wine, a cola made with cane sugar, and a bit of lime juice.
I'm telling you, this drink is like sangria, but perfect for lazy people. Two ingredients (three if you count the lime juice) poured in a glass over ice and you're done.
📝 Ingredients
- Red wine: For the wine, you don't need to use anything fancy. A cheap to moderately priced red table wine (I used a Rioja) will suffice. Bonus points if it's a Spanish wine.
- Cola made with cane sugar: make sure you grab something that is made with cane sugar and not high fructose corn syrup. Have you ever had the Coke that's made in Mexico (affectionately called MexiCoke)? It tastes SO much better than the stuff that's made in the U.S. I'd go for that. It's pretty widely available in regular grocery stores.
- Lime juice: Freshly squeezed, please!
👩🏻🍳 How to make a Kalimotxo
It almost couldn't be easier.
Start by filling your glass with ice. I went with some stemless wine glasses.
Add the red wine, followed by cola. Give it a squeeze of lime juice.
And that's it! Drink up!

❓ FAQs
Definitely a red wine. I'd stick to something Spanish, and not very expensive.
Whatever you use, make sure that it's made with cane sugar, and not high fructose corn syrup. Mexican Coca Cola is a good option.
Sure, I don't see why not! You could make a whole pitcher of these guys if you wanted.
