Smashed Black Beans

If you’re a black bean lover, like me, then you’ll love this.  Ever get the black beans in a Mexican restaurant?  These are similar, but healthier for you, since they don’t use lard or anything… just a bit of olive oil.Smashed Black Beans | A Nerd Cooks

This is an A Nerd Cooks original recipe!  Depending on your level of obsession with black beans, this serves anywhere from 1-2 ;).

You’ll need:

  • 1 can black beans, drained
  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • cumin and salt, to taste

Open your can of beans and drain off the starchy liquid.  Set aside.

In a medium sauce pan, add the olive oil and minced garlic.  Turn the heat to medium.  Once the garlic is fragrant, add the black beans.  Allow the beans to cook for a few minutes (~5 minutes or so), stirring occasionally.

Smash the beans a few times (until they reach your desired consistency) with a potato masher.  Add the cumin and salt, to taste.

Let the seasoned beans cook for a few more minutes (~3-5).  Eat!
